Be Generous

The location of these photos was in Cleburne County, Alabama.  I was riding my bicycle on the unpaved portion of the Chief Ladiga Trail between Piedmont and Georgia.  The dew was still on the grass as I rode silently through the woods on this beautiful spring morning.  As I came to one of the many lakes that are scattered throughout this area I laid my bike down and walked around with my camera and hopeful eye.

This photo is a collage of two photos of the same flower; one looking straight down and in the other I am holding the camera on the ground looking up toward the sky.  Sometimes when you take a photo, you just know in your heart that you have captured something special; it feels like you have just witnessed a small miracle; this was one of those occasions.  I could not wait until I got home to look at these photos, because I was positive I would enjoy what I saw.

The same thing happens sometimes in life; sometimes you know in your heart that what you have just experienced is truly something special.  What is it that can produce such a certainty in our lives; such an overwhelming conviction that what we have just seen will be unforgettable?  It happens when we are truly generous.  When we share what we have for no other reason than someone needed what we had.  When we give expecting nothing in return, just because it was the right thing to do, that will be unforgettable to somebody.

Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower.  As we go through our lives today, let us look for opportunities to share something with somebody.  Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to be kind to those in your life today; try to use ordinary situations.  If you see a need today, pause long enough to share what you have to lighten someone’s burden.  Give what you have. To someone it may be better than you dare to think.  Give it a try.  What have you got to lose?

Something to think about:

  • The best portions of a good man’s life — is His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.

  • A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses.

  • All we can hold in our cold dead hands is what we have given away.

  • Many people cling to their possessions instead of sharing them because they are worried about the future. But is not such an attitude finally unbelief?

  • Money can’t buy happiness—unless you spend it on somebody else.

  • God’s arithmetic: love, joy, and peace multiply when you divide with others.

Thankful for my generous friends
