wait

The morning was cool and breezy but the noontime sun brought welcomed relief as I bask in its glory.  The waters of a small creek tumbling over some stubborn stones supplies a soothing tune as I wait for something to photograph.  As I stand here soaking up the sunshine and enjoying nature’s symphony I am amazed at how quickly time has tiptoed past.  The pleasant surroundings had almost lulled me to sleep and convinced me that the hands of time were standing still.

This was a magical place.  Softly I heard the voice of Mr. Sunshine saying, “Your eyelids are getting heavy.”  And guess what?  I began to get sleepy.  Then I heard the creek whisper something about this being a great place for a nap.  And just as I was about to surrender and curl up for a short siesta I was shaken out of my trance by this dragonfly.  Like a silent rocket he streaked over the waters then rose effortlessly to meet my gaze.  A curious look stretches across his tiny face as begins to evaluate my threat level.  Satisfied that I pose him no danger he zooms to a twig poking out of the water and visits for a while.

Patiently he lingers and we pass the time checking each other out and enjoying some good company.  I am surprised that he would choose to hang out with me for such a long time.  Then I began to realize how fortunate I am to be visited by such a distinguished guest.  He might not have lots of money or travel in expensive automobiles but he did share a valuable gift.  He chose to slow down and quietly spend some time with me.  He shared something with me more valuable than money and more meaningful than a gift…his time.

How sad that we do not choose to spend some good old fashioned quality time with the people who mean the most to us.  Mom and dad will not be with us forever.  Your children will grow up and leave the nest.  One thing is for sure; today is all we got.  If you are going to make some good memories you had better start today.  Don't wait until it is too late; do it today.  Reach out to those who are lonely.  Don't be in such a mad rush that you fail to bring some sunshine into somebody’s life today.  Remember, happiness is a choice; choose to slow down and enjoy somebody’s company.

Something to think about:

  • He who is waiting for something to turn up might start with his own shirtsleeves.

  • Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.

  • Everything comes to those who wait, as long as those who wait work like mad while they are doing so.

  • The mosquito never waits for an opening—he makes one.

  • Don’t wait for an opportunity to come; it’s already here.

  • It may be difficult to wait . . .  but its worse to wish you had.

  • They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.

  • We do not obtain the most precious gifts by going in search of them but by waiting for them.

  • All comes at the proper time to him who knows how to wait.

Thankful for patient friends
