Amazing beauty can often be found in some of the most unexpected places. It has been my experience that it can be found any place we choose to search for it. That is why I love to hunt for places that have been largely deserted and seldom visited. When I find these special spaces I look around until I find something unique; which usually does not take long. This photo was taken in an old isolated cemetery. From all appearances no one had visited this sacred spot in months or even years.
The grounds were unkempt and the tomb stones were indecipherable from decades of neglect. It was in such a spot I found myself searching for something of beauty. Not long into my exploration I discover this flower standing bravely over a child sized grave. I take a few shots of the lovely flower but I am not satisfied with the results. Then I lie on the ground and look the flower in the eye and take this photo.
As soon as my finger pressed the shutter I knew this was a special photo. I loved the blurred and muted colors in the background, the flower in profile, and the unique point of view this position provided. Isn’t it funny how changing our position alters the appearance of things? So often we want the things and people around us to change, because they do not appeal to us. We look at something and quickly label it unattractive or ugly, then our circumstances change and we realize that they are truly unique and special.
I can remember when I was 18 thinking that I was so much smarter than my mother. Then when I turned 30 I was amazed at how much smarter my mother had become. Now the truth is, she did not change, I did. My perspective changed and I was finally able to value and appreciate how smart and great a person she was. Today, if your circumstances are not very appealing to you, try changing your point of view. Look at things from a different angle and you might be astounded at how much better they appear. Our perspectives is a choice, try looking up or perhaps kneels down and look at your problems; things might appear differently from this angle.
Something to think about:
-
Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.
-
Your point of view is everything: the pond is an ocean to a tadpole.
-
If you can evaluate things as they really are, and not as people report them to be, then you are wise, and the Lord is your teacher.
-
The world is full of untold beauty for him who has the eyes to see them.
-
To see ourselves as others see us is a most helpful gift. Hardly less important is the capacity to see others as they see themselves.
-
Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people.
