thankfulness

Saturday morning I rose before the sun and within a couple of hours I find myself standing in front of this leaf that’s covered in water drops.  There is a heavy fog that envelops me and explains the thousands of tiny liquid diamonds that are surrounding me.  As the sun begins to peek through the morning fog each dew drop tickles my eyes as they glisten and flash a dazzling bright light.

As I gaze at my green friend I am amazed at the contrast I can see.  Even though we are in the middle of a drought and all around us suffers from a famine of water, this morning a cool mist brings refreshment and a little relief.  Yesterday my leaf was withered and shrunken as it stood its ground in the oppressive heat, but this morning it is basking in the glorious dew of heaven.

As I look upon the leaf I believe I can almost hear a song rising from its branches.  As I stand here in the midst of the mist I can hear a song of thanksgiving and gratitude intensifying all around me.  Perhaps the song is originating from within my own parched heart that has suffered too long from the scorching effects of an ungrateful spirit.  (Or maybe the leaves really are beginning to cry out and sing…Luke 19:40).  Either way, we are in sad shape if we can go through this life and not be overwhelmed by things to be thankful for.

Think about it for a moment; how long has it been since you have really been thankful for something?  We have become so accustomed to living in luxury and comfort that we can go through weeks or even months without ever even saying the words, thank you.  No wonder we feel so incomplete and unsatisfied as we travel through life.  We take, consume, accumulate, collect and hoard and never once pause to consider how fortunate and blessed we are.  Shame on us!  Today, let each of us pause for a moment and be thankful that we have someone to be thankful to.

Something to think about:

  • A grateful thought toward heaven is of itself a prayer.

  • Gratitude is born in hearts that take time to count up past mercies.

  • How happy a person is depends upon the depth of his gratitude.

  • If you discern His love in every moment of happiness, you will multiply a thousandfold your capacity to fully enjoy your blessings.

  • You will receive a double portion of joy when you recognize My love coming to you through the kindness of others and when you learn to express your gratitude both to them and to Me.

  • So much has been given to me, I have no time to ponder over that which has been denied.

Thankful for the Dew
