Each day that I live I am more convinced that we find in life exactly what we are look for. People who are constantly looking for dirt to throw and smear on their neighbors find lots of dirty things in their lives. People who invest their time in the lives of others, encouraging and building them up seem to find many things that encourage their own hearts and lives. We get what we give; we find what we search for; we reap what we sow. Should we really be surprised if we spend our time throwing rocks at our neighbor house to find our own windows busted?
The greatest benefit to me personally from doing, “Moore than meets the eye” is how it has effected my vision. Not long after beginning my daily search for the hidden beauties in my ordinary life, I was astonished at just how many extraordinary and wonderful things surround me each and every day. I know they did not just suddenly start appearing in my life, but they had always been there, constantly seeking my attention, relentlessly parading at my feet and moving over my head. How could I have missed them? I simply was not looking for them.
Is the sky any less blue because the blind man does not see it? Is the person with 20/20 vision any better off than a blind man if he does not look? We are obscenely rich compared to the rest of the world, yet we live like we are poor and deprived. Daily we are surrounded by blessings undreamed of by most of the earth’s population and we are too inattentive, distracted and ungrateful to slow down to enjoy them. Every ordinary day given to us by the Master and touched by our Heavenly Father is a beautiful gift, a treasure to be accepted, unwrapped and enjoyed.
Today is just a normal day, just like yesterday and all the days before, but this can be a special day if we choose to make it so. Let us be aware of the treasures lying at our feet; let us learn from this ordinary day, love it, savor it and bless it before it departs. Let us not pass it by in a quest for some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let us hold it while we may for it will not always be so. One day we shall want more than the entire world, the return of an ordinary day just like today. Enjoyment is a choice and today will never return, let us seizes this day before it is lost forever. Let us search for opportunities to share our blessings and gifts with those around us, for that is what makes life rich and rewarding.
Something to think about:
-
Beauty is God’s handwriting—a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.
-
For the man sound in body and serene of mind there is no such thing as bad weather. Every sky has its beauty.
-
What you give to humanity you get back. Bread cast upon the waters is much more wholesome and nourishing than pie in the sky.
-
Do not wait for extraordinary circumstances to do good actions; try to use ordinary situations.
