fog

I stop on a dead end road early in the morning.  The fog is as thick and tangible as the morning is ire and dark.  Slowly I begin to discern shapes in the distance as the skies gradually brighten in the east.  I recognize a line of trees at the edge of this dew covered pasture.  After I take a few photos of these lowly trees hidden by the fog I make a strange discovery.  The sun is beginning to peak through the mist and make his presence know.

It is a strange and confusing feeling to be so completely enveloped by this thick fog.  The sun was completely hidden, the trees are indistinguishable and I felt like I had stepped into a cool rain forest.  Then as time leisurely passed by, the skies begin to cheer up and with the appearance of the sun came recognition, comprehension and understanding.   Objects in the distance suddenly were identified.  Not only was I able to focus better, but I was able to see further beyond my limited vision into the fields and mountains that lay before me.

Have you ever felt like you were walking in a fog?  Have you ever felt lost and confused as you attempted to navigate through a path you could not see clearly?  Life is filled with difficult choices and hundreds of decisions to be made every day; and sometimes we simply do not know which way to go.  What do we do when the sun is hidden and we do not know which road to take?

How we react in these difficult times depends on whether we live life by faith or by sight.  Are we concerned only for the here and now; do we live only to satisfy our selfish desires or do we think of others?  The fog of selfishness has distracted and blinded many people trying to find their way through life.  Let us realize that to live a selfish life only thinking of our pleasure is to live life in the ire darkness where the road home is always hidden.  Today, if you can not see which road to travel, look up; wait for the sun to shine and walk on in faith.

Something to think about:

  • The sky is not less blue because the blind man does not see it.

  • Never once since the world began
Has the sun ever stopped his shining.
His face very often we could not see,
    And we grumbled at his inconstancy;
But the clouds were really to blame, not he,
For, behind them, he was shining.
    And so—behind life’s darkest clouds
Our Lords love is always shining.
We veil it at times with our faithless fears,
And darken our sight with our foolish tears,
But in time the atmosphere always clears,
For his love is always shining.

  • Faith does not mean believing without evidence. It means believing in realities that go beyond sense and sight—for which a totally different sort of evidence is required.

  • Faith is not a sense, nor sight, nor reason, but taking the Lord at his Word.

  • We walk by faith, not by sight.

  • One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.

  • The business of faith is to believe things that are out of sight.
