 unity

I love to watch great teams play.  I don’t care what sport they play, I just love to watch great teams.  The way they interact with each other, the way they build upon each others strengths and minimize their weaknesses is a joy to behold.  Have you ever sat and watched the tiny drops of water collect and gather together after a rain?  First, a tiny streak of water unites with his neighbor, then they search out another like minded individual to unite with and they become stronger, bigger and more stable.

As I watch this drop of water slowly take the hand of his neighbor and connect with that which they have in common.  I gaze in wonder as I watch gravity slowly pry their fingers loose from this berry.  I stare at my liquid friend as he falls silently to the soggy soil beneath the tree.  What happens next?  They immediately unite with their team members to begin their march toward the sea, for they have learned the secret of cooperation.

It is amazing what you can learn from a single drop of water.  Too often we only think of ourselves and fail to realize that we can be stronger when we join hands with our neighbors and work together.  I am reminded of what our Lord said after He created Adam; it is not good that man should be alone.  So it is today, it is always better, more sweet and pleasant when we can join together with our friends to dwell together in unity.  We are stronger, tougher and sturdier when we are working together, one for all and all for one.

Today we are faced with great difficulties and opportunities that require great teamwork.  Let us join together to reach those who need our help.  Let us realize that our task will become lighter when many share the toil.  And remember that no member of a crew is praised for the rugged individuality of his rowing.  We shall all sink or swim together, let us search for ways to become a better team member in our families, friendships, jobs, churches and life; because unity creates strength and beauty.

Something to think about:

  • There can be no unity, no delight of love, no harmony, and no good in being, where there is but one. Two at least are needed for oneness.

  • Love alone is capable of uniting living beings in such a way as to complete and fulfill them, for it alone takes them and joins them by what is deepest in themselves.

  • Lord, give to all those in the world who seek thee a new understanding of their oneness, that forgetting what divides, they may so explore what unites that the whole world may observe that we are one family, in love and forbearance and a common joy.

  • Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

  • Cooperation is doing with a smile what you had to do anyway.

  • Cooperate! Remember the banana? Every time it leaves the bunch it gets skinned.

  • There is little chance for people to get together as long as most of us want to be in the back of the church, the front of the bus, and the middle of the road.

  • We are all strings in the concert of His joy.

Glad we are on the same team
