Turn your failures into assets

Rickey Moore Turn your failures into assets

This may seem like a strange object to photograph.  Can you guess what it is?  It is a spring from a chair that someone has discarded (dumped at the side of the road) and deserted at the edge of the forest.  Perhaps this was just their thoughtless custom, to dump their garbage here when nobody was looking; I do not know who or how or when, all I know is this; someone has dumped loads of garbage in this forgotten and forsaken place. I began to wonder what kind of a chair this spring once rested; was it handed down from father to daughter until finally the chair broke?  And instead of repairing the chair did they merely throw it out with the rest of their garbage?  I do not know, but here it rests rusting day after day, abandoned, unwanted and utterly useless.  As far as springs go, I guess you could call this one a failure. Oh, the spring is still intact and unbroken and probably could have still functioned as a pretty good spring, but not now, the rust has taken its toil.  Have you ever felt like this spring?  Have you ever made a bad mistake and felt abandoned by those you use to sit comfortably with?  Have you ever fallen and suddenly you are feeling unwanted and useless; a failure with garbage all around?  There have been times in my life that I have felt this way and perhaps you have too; maybe that about sums it up for you today? There is good news for you today!  Today you may have woken up in the garbage pile, or a jail cell, or just a prison of guilt, but you […]

Stop and smell the flowers

Rickey Moore Stop and smell the flowers

It was a cold day in Alabama.  The winds possessed an arctic flavor I am unaccustomed to but in spite of the chilly breeze the sun was shinning in all its gusto.  I found myself in Birmingham with four hours to kill so instinctively I was drawn to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.  I zip up my coat and pull my hat down and begin to wander a path as beautiful as it was silent.  After a few moments into my walk I decide the wintry gust was an amazing friend on this memorable morning because he was able to reserve the entire gardens exclusively for me. Initially I had nothing but contempt and curses for the unexpected cold weather.  I thought the chill in the air and the discomfort in my fingers would conspire to spoil my time in the gardens.    I had forgotten a great truth; all things truly do work together for our good (even cold weather).  Is there really any such thing as bad weather?  Or are there just different kinds of good weather?  Our job is to simply learn how to enjoy the weather we have been given. Life is learning how to enjoy what you have been given.  Life is too short to throw it away wishing you had different circumstances.  Why not set out to enjoy the circumstances you already have instead of crying over those you don’t have?  We are rich and blessed beyond imagination.  We have been given so many good things in life it is obscene to complain about what we do not have.  Our task is to enjoy more, appreciate more, value more and to be more grateful for the amazing people and circumstances that […]

Make the Lonelies go away

Rickey Moore Make the Lonelies go away

Please say hello to my little friend, his name is Leo.  I met Leo on a visit to the Atlanta Zoo where he lives with a bunch of his neighbors.  Of course his is a solitary life because he has a bad temper and does not play well with others.  He lives in a one bedroom apartment with glass walls and only eats delivery food.  His attitude is so bad he does not have a girlfriend even though his keepers have played matchmaker several times.  But none of the ladies will ever consent to a second date.  I guess you could call Leo a loner because he has so few friends and that suites him just fine. Someone says, you cannot call Leo a loner because he has hundreds of visitors every day.  People stand in line to take a look at Leo; He can’t be lonely because he is famous.  But the sad truth is a crowd is not company.  Even in the middle of a large crowd you can feel frightfully alone?  Albert Einstein once said, it is strange to be known so universally and yet be so lonely.  Judy Garland wrote, if I’m such a legend, then why am I so lonely? . . . Let me tell you, legends are all very well if you’ve got somebody around who loves you. For two decades Judy Garland struggled with addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol, and finally died of an apparent sleeping pill overdose at age 47.  How sad it must had been to be so famous, so rich and so friendless; then to take your own life in a lonely bathroom.  Loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, is […]
