The Sermon on the Mount has always fascinated me, I imagine much like it did the original hearers.  Check out Matthew chapter 5 where Jesus says, “14 You are the light of the world. A city located on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15 nor do they light a lamp and place it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines on all those in the house. 16 In the same way let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Jesus is promising the greatest of all blessings to those who are part of his kingdom… they are blessings of usefulness.  He has placed his followers in a position of influence.  They are to reflect His light and thereby be a blessing to those in their sphere of influence.  By the good deeds issuing from a changed life, they are able to stem the tide of corruption and darkness that engulfs a fallen world.

How many times a day, do you hear someone say, “Have a blessed day”?  Today, let’s turn this around and say, “Be a blessing today”.

Let’s joint together today and sing, “This Little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine . . .

If you worry about what might be . . . and wonder what might have been . . . you will ignore what is.  Every day is a new beginning.  Treat it that way.  Stay away from what might have been and move on.  Don't let negative words or actions of others affect your smile.  Decide that today is going to be a good day.  It is never too late to start becoming what you might have been.

What brings you real joy?  Do that . . . Be that . . . Share that . . . Spend more time with THAT and you'll get more joy!  Fight to find JOY in everyday things, ordinary things.  Life is not a race.  Find joy in today's journey.  To achieve our real potential, we have to rediscover joy and share it with others.  Remember, joy is always given, never grasped.

Mother Teresa said, "Joy is prayer - Joy is strength - Joy is love - Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.  She gives most who gives with joy."

Happiness isn't getting all that you want.  It's enjoying all that you have.  We always have enough to be happy if we are enjoying what we do have and not worrying about what we don't have.  Happiness comes from contentment and enjoy all the many blessings we have scattered all around us.

When something bad happens you have 3 choices.  You can either let it define you.  Let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.  We are not what we have done.  We are what we have overcome.  Believe in yourself and all that you are.  Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.  Remember, Challenges are what make life interesting.  Overcoming them is what makes them Meaningful.

The nature of beauty, is the beauty of nature.  The beauty that only nature can produce surrounds us every day.  These amazing wonders are all around us right now, filling our world with super natural beauty.  The earth has a beautiful song for those who will pause to listen.  I believe that if we truly love nature, we can find beauty everywhere.

Nature is one of God's ways of telling us just how special we are to Him.  Today, let us enjoy the gift of nature.  Let us be thankful that we have seen an orange sky with purple clouds.  How easy it is to forget that we have the privilege of living in God's art Gallery.

Hold Your GroundHold Your GroundHold Your Ground

As I walk around the ancient log cabin I am drawn to this old walnut tree.  As I look at the walnuts that litter the ground my mind travels back in time to another walnut tree.  My grandmother (blinded at birth) had a tree just like the one I stand before today.  I can remember helping her gather the earthbound walnuts, cracking, shelling and eventually eating them.  She loved her walnut tree; it did not look like much and offered very little shade, but it had qualities she could easily see.

Her sightless eyes taught me how to locate the hiding walnuts, she could crack them better than I could and her arthritic fingers could shell them quicker than I could eat them.  She was an amazing woman!  Last nights storm shook the walnut tree’s limbs pretty hard, liberating many nuts that were attached the night before.  Today they are scattered beneath the twisted branches of this gnarled tree.  As I survey the fallen walnuts I am suddenly drawn to these three which are still attached and defiantly clinging to their branch.

The more I look at this persistent trio the more I admire them.  They have a lot going for them and I am convinced that we could learn a lot from a few determined nuts.  Perhaps their most significant lesson is the importance of stick-ability; hanging on when everybody else lets go.  Think about it, who can minimize the importance of sticking to your job until one of you is finished.  Persistence, determination and perseverance pay great dividends to those willing to hang on a little longer.

Let us realize that a great tree is only a little nut that held its ground.  One of the major determining factors of true greatness is hanging on after others have let go.  Happiness is a choice; choose to stick to something good today and hold on tight.

Something to think about:

  • Enjoy what you can; endure what you must.
  • He who cannot endure tough times will not see good times.
  • When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
  • Don’t pray for an easier life; pray to be a stronger person.
  • Consider the postage stamp: Its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.
  • The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination.
  • The best time to hold on is when you reach the place where the average person gives up.
  • Nothing great was ever done without much enduring.

Thankful for patient love and enduring friends

Sometimes I forget just how powerful a simple smile can be.  It has a way of diffusing tense situations.  It has the power of reconciliation.  It is what introduces us to new friends.  A smile is the power behind first impressions.  Every time you smile at someone it is an act of love, a beautiful gift to that person.

Have we forgotten how attractive a smile can be?  I can remember the first time I witnessed the smile of my children; and how it made me feel.  A smile takes but a moment but the memory of it lasts forever.

There are hundreds of languages around the world, but a smile speaks them all.  Today, let your smile change the world.  Don’t let the world change your smile.  When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile.

Do me a favor, and smile.

The worst thingThe worst thingThe worst thing I could be is the same as everyone else

One of the biggest challenges in life is to be yourself in a world that is trying desperately to make you like everyone else.  Every day children are being ostracized and bullied simply because they are different.  And what crazy things we all do to fit into the popular crowd?  We have felt the pressure to conform and heard the cruel jokes.

People laugh because we are different.  Perhaps we should be laughing because they are all the same?  Today, let’s celebrate our differences.  Embrace what makes us unique and special and stop trying so hard to be like everybody else.

Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

Today you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive, who is youer than you.

The worst thing I could be is the same as everyone else.

Whatever happened to having fun?  Dr. Seuss said, if you NEVER did, you SHOULD.  These things are FUN, and FUN is good.  Too often I forget to have fun.  I take life so seriously sometimes that I drain all the enjoyment from it.

Dale Carnegie said, people rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.  Wow!  We should read that every morning… people rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.  I guess the real question is, am I having any fun in what I am doing?  When was the last time I had fun?

In this photo taken Sunday afternoon on the Pinhoti Trail near Pine Glen, We didn’t realize we were making memories . . . We just Thought we were having fun.  You ought to try it.  What have you got to lose?

Something to think about:

·        Happiness is like jam . . . you can’t spread even a little without getting some on yourself.

·        Just play.  Have fun.  Enjoy the game. . . Michael Jordan

·        Live life fully while you’re here.  Experience everything.  Take care of yourself and your friends.  Have fun, be crazy, and be weird. . . Anthony Robins

·        Creativity is intelligence having fun.

Life takes us to unexpected places. Love brings us home

It is funny how time and distance change you.  When I think back to the ME of my childhood.  Life seemed so easy going, carefree and filled with fun and adventure.  We could take a stick and entertain ourselves for hours imagining the life of a pirate in the morning and a warrior in the evening.  As I grew up more and more of my time was spent conjuring up ways to escape the confines of home.

Eventually I did escape.  College, work, detours and wrong turns have all assisted in this runaway’s escape.  It is funny, home is a place we grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to get back to.  Why is that?  Because Home is where all our story’s begin.  Where did we learn the meaning of love?  Where did you get your values? Hopes and dreams?  Where did you learn to pray?  Home sweet home.

Everybody daydreams of the beauty of travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.  You can go other places, all right – you can live on the other side of the world, but you can’t ever leave home.   Because, all journeys eventually end in the same place, home.  Why? Because Home is where the heart is.

Having a place to go – is a home.  Having someone to love – is a family.  Having both – is the greatest blessing of all.

Sometimes in the waves of change we find our true direction.

How many times in my life have I knelt in prayer to ask God for guidance only to find my life turned upside down?  As I stood watching the wave’s crash upon the seashore I realize that the same all mighty hand that is shaping the shoreline is molding me.  And the waves that take us away are the same ones that can carry us home.  So, why do we struggle against the waves of change?  Are they not God’s instruments to make us more like him?  God sometimes takes us into troubled waters not to drown us but to cleanse us.

The waves may hurt our feelings, but remember, feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming but we can choose which ones to surf.

Lord, teach me to pray.  Too often my heart is cold and my words are mechanical.  I spent too much time trying to say the correct words instead of spending time in communion with you.  Lord, help me to breathe my selfishness and breathe in your presence.  Remind me that prayer is not overcoming your reluctance, but laying hold of your willingness. . . . Have you ever noticed that all Hollywood monsters cast big shadows?  The good news is that they are not real . . . they like most of the things that we spend our lives worrying about exist only in our imagination.

Check out these famous quotes about anxiety:

·        Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.

·        You can't wring your hands and roll up your sleeves at the same time.

·        My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened.

·        Worry is interest paid on trouble before it comes due.

·        Rule number one is, don't sweat the small stuff. Rule number two is, it's all small stuff.

·        Fear can keep us up all night long, but faith makes one fine pillow.

You know what they say, about sticks and stones?  Their damage can sometimes last much longer than broken bones . . . today, let’s consider the awesome power of what we say.  You know, those little remarks we make, the sudden burst of furry, the unbridled words, that wildfire that sometimes destroys everything in its path.   How many brothers and sisters will never again experience the love they once knew . . . why?  Because of a hurtful word.  How much heartbreak is experienced because of careless words?

Ripple Effect . . .

Imagine that you are standing at the edge of a pool of crystal clear water, smooth as glass.  All around you there is calm and stillness.  As you look upon the surface of the lake it is like looking into heavens mirror, as it reflects the beauty which surrounds you.  Can you see this pool of water?  Of course you can, you have seen it hundreds of times.

Now, look down at your feet and pick up one of the pebbles scattered upon the ground.  It is just a small insignificant little stone.  Hold it in your hand and roll it between your thumb and fingers. Now, drop it into the water.  It barely makes a sound and vanishes beneath pool, never to be seen or thought of again.

Wait, something is happening.  That small insignificant little pebble did something at the point of impact.  It started a ripple.  First one little wave, then two, then four . . . and to your amazement you watch as the entire body of water is covered in the wake of one tiny stone.  That is the Ripple Effect.

Today, let me remind you as you stand on the edge of this day that your actions carry great power.  Every word you speak strikes the surface of someone’s life and starts a ripple.  Every deed you drop into pool of this day makes an impact.  What we do, what we say, the attitude we choose to have, they all makes a difference as we drop them into someone’s pool.

The good news is, we get to choose our pebbles.  I can choose to be kind as easily as I can choose to be hateful.  I can choose to throw smiles or frowns.  Criticism or complements.  Praise or complaining.  Today, I get to choose if I am going to be a blessing or a curse in the lives of the people I meet.  Happiness is a choice . . . choose to have a positive effect today.

Click the Image and throw the stone . . . Share the image and watch the ripple effect begin.

Ripple EffectRipple EffectSimple choices create wide circles of change

  • “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” ― Mother Teresa on the Ripple Effect.
  • Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple effect with no logical end.
  • No Act Of Kindness Is Too Small. The Gift Of Kindness May Start As A Small ripple That Over Time Can Turn Into A Tidal Wave Affecting The Lives Of Many.
  • Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Rickey Moore Keep on Climbing

While traveling the other day I came across a field whose only crop seemed to be these thistles.  Hundreds of these dangerous looking purple and green plants swayed in the morning breeze seemed to be waiving at me, trying to catch my attention.  I park and take a little stroll on the wild side looking for something of beauty amongst the weeds. I was amazed at the variety of creatures (bugs, insects, spiders, and one very large & ill tempered snake) that also were drawn to this strange garden.  Each purple leaf appeared to be adorned with a creepy-crawly and a stinger.  Bugs of all shapes and sizes buzzed about in bewilderment as I browsed the mid-evil foliage.  Once again I was rewarded as I simply slowed down and looked for something good in an unexpected place.  I have decided you can find beauty and blessings wherever you are if you will just look for them. So here I am and I notice this one plant was surrounded by ladybugs.  The base of the plant had a few dozen of these feminine creatures all riding the slow bus and headed for the top floor.  This one beauty was perched high above the others and enjoying her breakfast with a wonderful view of Bugville.  No doubt she had been climbing for a long time and had suffered some hardship along the way.  She was missing a good portion of her right wing (I repaired it in Photoshop).  But in spite of the difficulties and her handicaps she kept climbing until she reached the buffet in Bugville. Let my Lady friend be an encouragement to you today.  When you are faced with difficult circumstances, keep on climbing.  […] - Turning your Memories into Treasures!
